Evaluation of Erythrocyte 5-Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase Activity in the Blood of Crucian Carp, Curassius

چکیده
The activity of 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) in the blood of crucian carp, Carassius auratus langsdorfiii, was measured under a variety of lead exposure conditions. A three-week exposure of crucian carp to water lead concentrations of 3, 10, and 30 ppb inhibited their ALA-D activities with increasing water lead concentrations. When crucian carp were exposed to a water lead concentration of 30 ppb, depressed activity of ALA-D became visible after two days, and this activity became even more depressed with increasing exposure periods. The ALA-D activity of crucian carp after the fish were transferred from a water lead concentration of 100 ppb (two weeks of exposure) to lead-free water recovered to only 40% of the value seen in the fish at the beginning of the exposure test, even after four weeks. Therefore, these characteristics concerning ALA-D in crucian carp blood indicate that this enzyme is useful as an indicator of lead pollution in fresh water.

1. The activity of erythrocyte 6aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) dehydratase and blood protoporphyrin concentrations have been measured in patients with various anaemias, a group of subjects with known lead exposure and a group of control subjects. Leucocyte ALA synthase was measured in subjects from the last two groups. 2. Erythrocyte ALA dehydratase activity was significantly depressed in the group...
متن کاملLead toxicity in the pregnant rat. II. Effects of low-level lead on delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity in maternal and fetal blood or tissue.
Lead was administered to pregnant rats in drinking water (5 ppm) from day 1 to day 18 or 21 of gestation, at which time the dams and fetuses were sacrificed. The red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration were significantly lower in the lead-treated fetuses than in untreated controls on day 21 of gestation, but not in the lead-treated dams. The delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD...

5-Aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in two patients with compound heterozygous 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase deficiency porphyria was studied over the last 20 years. The patients' enzyme activity was <10% from 1977 to 1997. An acute crisis in each patient was successfully treated by infusion of glucose and heme arginate. After this therapy both urinary 5-aminolevulinic acid (A...

The question of how the scaling of metabolic rate with body mass (M) is achieved in animals is unresolved. Here, we tested the cell metabolism hypothesis and the organ size hypothesis by assessing the mass scaling of the resting metabolic rate (RMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR), erythrocyte size, and the masses of metabolically active organs in the crucian carp (Carassius auratus). The M of th...
